Developmentalism can be thought of in two different ways: (a) as a form of economic and political organization of capitalism alternative to economic liberalism and the corresponding style of economic coordination of that capitalism; and (b) as a school of economic thought. In this second sense, the new developmentalism is a theoretical system that has its origin in classical political economy, Keynesian economic theory and classical developmentalism or development economics. As a form of capitalism, developmentalism manifests for the first time as mercantilism; Bismarkism, national-developmentalism, and the East Asian developmental model are other historical cases of really existing developmentalism.
