This paper, following a soft chronological criterion, presents the following theories of sate: the republican, the organic, the contractual or liberal classic, the Hegelian, the Marxist, the elites', the liberal-pluralist, the public choice, the corporatist, the bureaucratic and the managerial, the developmental, and the new-developmental, giving to the last one, which is being developed with the participation of the author a little more space. It presents main contributors for each theory, the method adopted, its authoritarian or democratic character, and its main characteristics.
