The thesis that democracy is slowly dying applies in countries like Hungary, Poland, and Turkey; not in rich countries whose democracy is consolidated. Democracy was a conquest of the people that bothers the elites, but neither they nor the people want to replace it with an authoritarian regime. This thesis diverts attention from the real problem - the failure of neoliberalism and the neoclassical economics that justifies it. It is this failure and the perplexity of the wealthy world at China's successful developmentalism that is giving rise to right-wing populism and widespread malaise in the West.
