Democracia, revolução capitalista e Primavera Árabe

Luiz Carlos Bresser-Pereira

Política Externa, vol. 21 (4), abril 2013: 135-141.

The 'Arab Spring' opened room for democracy, but countries like Egypt and Tunisia that were successful in their popular revolt will only succeed if they also realize their national and industrial revolution, or, in one word, their capitalist revolution. This is not the view of the 'liberal-institutionalist' approach, which believes that political development is independent of economic development, but of the advocates of 'historic-structuralist' approach or theory. The previous condition for a consolidate democracy is that the country adopts a developmentalist strategy, forms an independent national-state, and industrialize. This is the real challenge that countries like Egypt and Tunisia face.
